I believe that the choices we make in our lives determines who we are as a person. It is safe to say that every day we are faced with difficult choices and we must make pivotal decisions. One of the choices we have to make is how we will invest in our own future and the future of our community. The best way to do this is to be smart with your money.
Being raised by a Hispanic single mother of three, I know what it is like to face economic hardships. At times, it is very tough to see the pressure my mother has had to go through just to provide us with food, clothing, and a roof over our heads. Growing up and seeing this has really inspired me to think of ways to get out of this deprivation. The way to do this was to set goals and find ways to save money for me and my family. The first ideas that came to my mind was that I needed to get multiple jobs, I had to save money, and not buy expensive things that I didn’t really need. These are all great ways to save money and be financially stable momentarily. However, the main investment that a lot of people forget about is EDUCATION! Investing in my education was key to supporting my family for many years to come. I will be a first-generation college student and not only will this impact my generation, but it will also impact the next generations to come in my family. All it takes is for one person to make a difference and the rest will follow. A college education is a key stepping stone in changing an entire family’s success. Growing up, I have seen many of my good friends in my community have the opportunity to go to college, but they decided not to. The reason being is that they have been advocated in working multiple jobs just so that they could buy or pay for the things that they need at the moment. Don’t get me wrong, having a job is a great way to save up some money, but that can only take you so far. People need to look at the bigger picture and they must ask themselves these questions, “Where will I be 10 years from now? Will I be able to buy a home for me and my family?, and What career will I have?”. Now this is where we face the difficult choices in life that I had mentioned earlier. If something is getting in the way of you getting an education, you have to put an end to that. Sometimes you have to take a step back and re-evaluate your situation. We are the future of this world that we live in and the only way we can me it better is through education and making new discoveries. Without this, we would just become stagnant and we will not make any progress in making our world a better place.
Being a minority and fighting a disease known as Lupus, I know what it is like to battle through many tough situations. This is why my goal in life is not for the betterment of my own well-being, but for the people around me and the people I love. Everything I have gone through has made me see the world differently and it has made me selfless. So whatever we want to be in life, our goals and aspirations should not be selfish because selfish thinking is what suppresses progress. All in all, having the right tools to invest your money well, working hard, and getting an education are all the components in having a successful future.
